The other night, my husband pointed out to me that there was a novel of The Last Unicorn. Although I saw the movie as a teen or a young adult, I didn't know it was actually based on a book, but apparently it's considered a classic in some circles.
Although I couldn't find a copy of the novel for the Nook, I did find the graphic novel in digital format. Although I do read a couple of magazines on my Nook, I hadn't yet tried a graphic novel, so I decided The Last Unicorn would be a good one to try.
To say I was impressed would be an understatement. The illustrations are taken from the movie, but done in graphic novel style, and they are exquisite. I found I had to read the book twice -- once for the story (though I already knew it, I wanted to read all the various little bubbles and boxes), and once to take in the eye candy.
I'm actually not really a big reader of graphic novels -- the only other one I've ever read was 30 Days of Night (and then only because I really liked the movie and wanted to read the book it was based on). I liked that one, but I found that the style was not quite linear enough for me -- there was so much going on in each panel, on each page, that I didn't feel I could "read it straight through," so to speak.
But more graphic novels like this could really encourage me to read more of them. The graphic novel of The Last Unicorn is as much a visual feast (and, to me, a tribute to a classic film) as anything else.
Have you ever tried reading graphic novels? What were your impressions?
