I am in love with this idea: The Scrapbook of Frankie Pratt is an illustrated novel with very little text. All of the images are vintage 1920s images, photographs and postcards and clothing catalog images, all arranged scrapbook-style to tell a story of a girl pursuing her dream in the 1920s. The young boy I nanny for recently asked me to read him the same book three times in a row. Usually when kids ask you to read the same thing over and over, it's because they happen to really like that particular book, but in this case, it's just because we were waiting for the water to boil so we could make his macaroni and cheese.
Apparently a small pot full of water boils in 3.2 picture books.

Tonight, as I was reading a chapter book to the kids I babysit for, the younger one (who was playing beside the bed) suddenly jumped up to look at the page I was reading. He'd heard something he was interested in, and wanted to see if there was an illustration of it.

I recently started babysitting for a preschool-age boy who has a lot of energy and has a hard time sitting still. He would much rather play active games than sit and listen to stories. I'm a big bookworm, though, and I like to emphasize the importance of books -- I have always felt like kids need to see adults modeling frequent reading habits, and not just see books in the home (as it used to be believed).
Even with a high-energy kid, though, there are ways to sneak a little book reading into a child's schedule. Here are a few ideas I've come up with. Though I’ve been ill for about a month, I’ve still managed to read a couple of books to my daughter (or have her read them to me, when possible) each night, and our latest favorite is Sally and the Some-Thing.
